1、农作物秸秆量大，覆盖面广，燃料来源充足。2、秸秆含硫量很低。国际能源机构的有关研究表明，秸秆的平均含硫量只有千分之3.8，而煤的平均含硫量约达百分之一。且低温燃烧产生的氮氧化物较少，所以除尘后的烟气不进行脱硫，烟气可直接通过烟囱排入大气。丹麦等国家的运行试验表明秸秆锅炉经除尘后的烟气不加其他净化措施完全能够满足环保要求。所以秸秆发电不仅具有较好的经济效益，还有良好的生态效益和社会效益。3、各类作物秸秆发热量略有区别，但经测定，秸秆热值约为15000KJ/Kg，相当于标准煤的50%。其中麦秸秆、玉米秸秆的发热量在农作物秸秆中为最小，低位发热量也有14.4MJ/kg，相当0.492kg标准煤。使用秸秆发电，可降低煤炭消耗。
